Brunel fitted her with a 1000 hp steam engine, the most powerful yet used at sea. Brunel had proposed extending its transport network by boat from Bristol across the Atlantic Ocean to New York City before the Great Western Railway opened in 1835. The Great Western Steamship Company was formed by Thomas Guppy for that purpose.
